A Day in the Life: Meet Khadija

Khadija is a 10-year-old girl in Bangladesh. She knew the cyclone was coming when she heard warnings being blasted through local loudspeakers.

"My grandmother and I decided to stay in our house," Khadija later told volunteers from the World Food Programme (WFP).

"We thought the house would be strong enough but the wind was very strong and very loud. I was so afraid. Most of our home was damaged although luckily my grandmother and I were not hurt."

School was closed for a week and food was hard to come by immediately after the storm. But Khadija walked 3.7 miles to collect rice and oil from a WFP distribution center.

Money for relief supplies to Bangladesh cyclone victims was helped greatly by funds raised by Yum! Brands' employees and customers in the South Pacific. They collected the funds during last fall's World Hunger Relief Week (WHRW) partnership between Yum! and the WFP. The company considers the first WHRW effort to have been very successful and is planning to gear up for another WHRW fund-raising drive this fall.

Khadija was thankful for the food and for efforts to get her school open again. "One day I hope to go to a secondary school and keep learning for as long as I can," she said. "This is my dream!"
