What is World Hunger Relief?
Started in 2007 as World Hunger Relief Week, Yum! and its brands (KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Long John Silver’s and A&W Restaurants) created World Hunger Relief to highlight and drive action in the movement to end world hunger by increasing awareness, raising money for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and other hunger relief agencies around the globe, and encouraging volunteerism.

This year, Yum! is proud to partner again with the WFP to help end world hunger. This year’s second annual in-restaurant and online “World Hunger Relief 2008” Fall campaign has been extended to several weeks in order to address the harsh reality that nearly one billion people around the world are starving and the problem is getting worse every day. With more than 35,000 restaurants in 110+ countries and more than 1.3 million associates, franchisees, vendors and our families mobilized this fall, we will make a difference in our local communities and on a global scale.

Our core philanthropic mission is to feed people in need. Yum! and our brands have been committed to fighting hunger for more than a decade by donating $50 million of prepared food annually to the those in need in the U.S. In 2008, Yum! and our brands expect to donate more than 10 million pounds of food to those in need in the U.S. In addition, Yum! has been the primary sponsor of the Dare to Care Food Bank (an affiliate of America’s Second Harvest) in Louisville, Kentucky, donating $1 million annually for the past seven years to feed 90,000 hungry children in underserved minority communities.

We understand, however, that hunger has no borders. Hunger affects nearly one billion people around the world every day. As the world’s largest restaurant company, addressing the issue of hunger on a global scale is a natural fit. We reached out to the world’s largest hunger relief agency, and subsequently, our senior executives made visits to WFP operations in Sudan and Guatemala. After seeing the WFP in action, we were compelled to create an unprecedented, globally-focused effort to raise awareness about hunger and raise funds to help feed the hungry poor by donating to the WFP. With your help, we can make a huge impact and help end hunger around the world for the second year. Together we can help significantly in bridging the gap between hunger and hope. What is the World Food Programme (WFP)?
WFP is the world’s leading humanitarian agency feeding more than 86+ million poor in 80 countries world wide including hungry children in the world’s poorest communities.

WFP is unique in that out of every dollar donated, 93 cents go directly to support field operations. WFP’s life-saving programs provide safety nets and mother-child health programs in extreme situations. They are not just providing a hand out, but rather a hand up:

helping villages and communities lift themselves from chronic malnutrition by helping build infrastructures (roads, bridges, schools, medical clinics) in exchange for food.
providing food and resources to build self-sustaining communities in the most impoverished corners of the world.
provide school feeding, using as platform for nutritional interventions.

Why join forces with WFP? (and not another hunger relief organization?)
The World Food Programme has the resources and track record of making a tremendous impact in hunger relief all around the world. WFP has helped in recent crises such as:

Flood survivors in Nepal
Cyclone Nargis survivors in Myanmar
Hurricane Felix survivors in Nicaragua
Peru earthquake survivors
Refugees from the Darfur region
The World Food Programme works with more than 2,200 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and humanitarian agencies in order to feed on average 86+ million people in need each year. World Hunger Relief Week, therefore, will help many other charities in their fight against hunger as well. For example, these related organizations make sure school children have a daily nourishing meal or ensure new mothers get the nutritional aid and support they need for their children to thrive.

What is the difference between Friends of WFP and WFP?
Friends of WFP is a U.S.-based non-profit organization that focuses on building support in the United States for WFP and other hunger relief operations. WFP is a United Nations agency that carries out operations around the world to deliver food aid to those in need. Friends of WFP works in support of WFP, as well as other efforts to fight hunger and support food aid. It is an independent entity with its own staff and Board of Directors.

Friends of WFP sends donations made in the U.S. to WFP for relief operations in areas of greatest need all around the globe. Contributions from outside the U.S. are sent directly to WFP and other NGOs that support them.

Is my donation tax deductible? How do I get a receipt for tax purposes? (outside U.S.)
Donations made directly to the World Food Programme may not be tax deductible in your country of residence. Laws regarding contributions to United Nations agencies vary from country to country. WFP has partnered with several organizations around the world to provide tax deductibility for donors.
